FIBROCOLONOSCOPY
Fibrocolonoscopy is an endoscopic examination performed by inserting an endoscope to diagnose colon diseases. This procedure is widely used to detect colon cancer, as it allows for tissue sampling for histological examination and the removal of benign neoplasms and polyps. Fibrocolonoscopy in Lviv at our medical center is performed using modern equipment that can detect even initial changes in the mucosa.
The first endoscopic method for diagnosing the colon was fibrocolonoscopy, followed by colonoscopy using digital video endoscopes, and later capsule endoscopy. In capsule endoscopy, the patient swallows a capsule with a camera, which records all changes in the mucosa. Doctors then analyze the recorded data and provide the patient with a conclusion.

An important stage before colonoscopy is cleansing the intestines with special osmotic drugs and following a diet:
- Three to four days before the procedure, it is advisable to exclude foods with high fiber content, such as cabbage, legumes, cereals, and carbonated drinks.
- Allowed foods include low-fat cottage cheese, boiled eggs, pasta, potatoes, boiled rice, lean fish, chicken breast, and bread made from refined flour.
- Water, tea, and light juices without pulp are allowed.
- During the diet, it is advisable to limit raw fruits, vegetables, sweets, and black bread
- Iron preparations and activated charcoal should not be taken, as they can stain the intestinal mucosa.
FIBROCOLONOSCOPY METHOD
Stages of the procedure:
- The patient lies on the couch on their left side.
- The procedure is performed without anesthesia or under sedation (short-term anesthesia). Some patients are given antispasmodics to improve visibility. Small amounts of air are supplied through the endoscope to expand the colon walls, allowing visualization of internal surfaces. Mild discomfort may be felt.
- An endoscope lubricated with a special gel is inserted into the anus and slowly advanced from the rectum to the hepatic flexure of the colon and further to the transition of the colon into the small intestine.
- The doctor examines the mucosa and, if necessary, takes a biopsy or removes pathological formations. The entire colon is visible, with fibrocolonoscopy performed up to the cecum.
- The procedure lasts 20–40 minutes, depending on the scope of the examination
- After the procedure, the patient can go home. If sedation was used, the patient is observed briefly before discharge.
Two hours after the procedure, the patient can start eating small portions of food, starting with liquid food (200–300 ml).
The procedure can be performed without a referral, but it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist before the examination. During the consultation, the doctor questions the patient and determines the presence of indications for colonoscopy. Symptoms that the patient perceives as threatening may not actually require the procedure.
