FIBROGASTROSCOPY

Fibrogastroscopy, or fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy (FGDS), is a procedure for examining the inner surface of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum using a flexible endoscope. During FGDS, it is possible to perform a biopsy (taking samples of pathological tissues for analysis), remove polyps, and carry out other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The intervention is performed to diagnose diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, stop bleeding, and perform other manipulations. Fibrogastroscopy in Lviv is performed in our medical center by an experienced endoscopist.

MAIN INDICATIONS FOR FIBROGASTROSCOPY:

  • Symptoms characteristic of digestive disorders, including heartburn, epigastric pain, and belching
  • Impaired swallowing
  • Suspicion of gastric or duodenal ulcer, duodenitis, or atrophic gastritis
  • Suspected oncology
  • Bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract or suspicion of it
  • Monitoring of the treatment

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO FIBROGASTROSCOPY:

  • Acute circulatory disorders
  • Exacerbation of bronchial asthma
  • Impaired consciousness that makes endoscopy impossible
  • Acute respiratory disease

HOW FIBROGASTROSCOPY IS PERFORMED AT THE KORONA CLINIC IN LVIV

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy in Lviv at our medical center is performed on modern devices with high resolution. The doctor can accurately assess the condition of the mucous membrane of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum and provide an informative conclusion. To clarify the diagnosis after an endoscopic examination, a consultation with a gastroenterologist is recommended.

PREPARATION FOR THE FIBROGASTROSCOPY PROCEDURE:

  • The procedure is performed on an empty stomach, so you should not eat for 8–10 hours.
  • Be sure to inform your doctor about the medications you are taking and any allergic reactions to medications that you know about.
  • Inform your doctor about any diseases that need attention before the procedure.

FIBROGASTROSCOPY METHOD

Stages of FGDS in Lviv at the Korona Clinic:

  1. During the procedure, the patient is placed on a couch on his left side. He is asked to clamp the mouthpiece with his teeth, and his oropharynx is irrigated with a local anesthetic. Short-term anesthesia (sedation) is also possible — then the patient is asleep and does not feel anything. Standard gastroscopy is almost painless, and slight discomfort during the examination is due to the presence of a probe in the patient’s throat.
  2. An endoscope (gastroscope) is inserted through the patient’s mouth — a flexible tube with a camera at the end. The diameter of the endoscope is about 7 mm. The endoscope is slowly advanced into the cavity of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The image from the endoscope is displayed on the screen.
  3. The doctor carefully examines the mucosa and records changes. During the examination, the esophagus, stomach, and initial part of the duodenum are accessible. If necessary, a biopsy or other therapeutic and diagnostic manipulations are performed.
  4. The doctor removes the endoscope with a light movement. If the patient was given short-term anesthesia (sedation), he wakes up and is briefly observed. Then he can go home.

The duration of the procedure is 5–10 minutes. After gastroscopy under sedation, the patient cannot drive for a day.

DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT OPPORTUNITIES OF FIBROGASTRODUODENOSCOPY

Since the advent of endoscopy in medicine, doctors have been able to detect erosions, ulcers, inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa, polyps, and tumors at a very early stage. Accurate diagnosis is the key to successful therapy and even complete cure.

During the examination, the doctor can remove polyps up to 5 mm. In case of bleeding, the endoscopist can cauterize the vessel, apply clips, or introduce hemostatic drugs during the procedure. After some diseases of the esophagus, a complication such as a stricture — a narrowing — may occur; this area can be expanded using the EGD method.

Gastroscopy is an indispensable method of examination in patients with gastritis because this diagnosis is established only on the basis of a stomach biopsy.
