GASTROSCOPY IN LVIV
Gastroscopy, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy, is a painless and fast endoscopic examination method performed using a gastroscope. This is an elastic tube with an optical system attached to it, which demonstrates in detail the condition of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract and allows for biopsy sampling and the introduction of therapeutic drugs. The image is transmitted to a monitor, and the doctor can observe the current clinical picture. If you need gastroscopy in Lviv, the price of such a service in our clinic is average, and the information content is high.
When is Gastroscopy Prescribed?
A specialist prescribes gastroscopy in case of suspicion of:
- Diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, including gastritis and peptic ulcer
- Helicobacter pylori infection
- Tumors and polyps
Symptoms from the digestive tract that indicate the need for the procedure include stomach pain, changes in the color and consistency of feces, swallowing disorders, and other related signs.
How to Prepare for a Gastroscopy?
8–10 hours before the procedure:
- Do not eat. The procedure is performed on an empty stomach. The last meal should be light. Avoid fatty and fried foods, meat, bread, and cereals—prefer light soup or liquid porridge.
- Do not drink coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, or alcohol. Only a small amount of clean water is allowed (no later than 3–4 hours before the procedure).
On the day of the appointment:
- Do not smoke. Smoking increases the secretion of gastric juice, which can complicate the examination.
- Do not chew gum. It stimulates gastric secretion.
- Bring the results of previous examinations, including tests, medical records, or gastroscopy findings from previous years.
Tell your doctor:
- About allergies, especially to medications, painkillers, or anesthetics.
- About chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or asthma.
- About medications you are taking. Some drugs may need to be temporarily stopped or the dose adjusted before the examination.
If esophagogastroduodenoscopy is performed under medically induced sleep, do not drive afterwards or perform responsible tasks.
Proper preparation guarantees a high-quality examination. If you have any questions, consult a gastroenterologist at the Korona Clinic before the procedure.
How is Gastroscopy Performed?
During the examination, the patient lies on a couch on their left side. A plastic mouthpiece is placed in the mouth, which ensures free movement of the endoscope and protects the teeth. The patient’s throat is irrigated with a lidocaine solution, and an endoscope is inserted into the oral cavity.
The probe does not interfere with breathing and does not cause pain or significant discomfort. At the same time, for patients with a high level of anxiety, there is the possibility of examination under medically induced sleep.
The probe is carefully advanced through the esophagus and stomach to the duodenum and examined. During the examination, the doctor blows air into the stomach to better visualize it and straighten the folds.
In the case of gastroscopy with biopsy, thin medical instruments are attached to the gastroscope, which capture a small piece of the mucous membrane.
Advantages of Gastroscopy as a Method of Examining the Stomach
Thanks to modern endoscopic equipment, gastroscopy allows direct examination of the mucous membrane of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, revealing even minor pathological changes. Advantages include:
- High accuracy of endoscopic diagnostics. Gastroscopy allows visual assessment of the mucous membrane, detecting inflammation, erosions, ulcers, tumors, polyps, and other pathologies that may go unnoticed during ultrasound or X-ray. This examination is often necessary to confirm the diagnosis and choose a treatment strategy.
- Minimal trauma. The procedure is minimally invasive, does not require long recovery, and can be performed under anesthesia if needed.
- The possibility of taking a biopsy. During the procedure, the doctor can take tissue samples for laboratory analysis, which is especially important if oncological processes or infections (such as Helicobacter pylori) are suspected.
- Efficiency of results. The endoscopist receives images in real time and can immediately make a preliminary diagnosis and provide recommendations.
- The possibility of therapeutic intervention. Minor formations or bleeding can be treated immediately, including stopping bleeding, removing a polyp, or extracting a foreign body.
- Safety. In the hands of an experienced endoscopist, gastroscopy is a safe procedure with minimal risk of complications.
