Radiofrequency Ablation of Lower Extremity Veins
Varicose veins are a common problem that affects the quality of life of millions of people worldwide. This disease is characterized by the expansion and change in the shape of the veins, usually in the legs. Varicose veins are accompanied by pain, swelling, and a number of other unpleasant symptoms, often leading to inflammation of the veins. Traditional methods of treating varicose veins are surgical removal of varicose veins or sclerotherapy. However, radiofrequency ablation of veins (RFA) is a safer and less traumatic alternative.
What is Radiofrequency Ablation of Lower Extremity Veins?
Radiofrequency ablation is a painless and quick method of treating varicose veins. The procedure is performed using special equipment, without incisions and in one visit to the doctor. During RFA, the lumen of the affected vein decreases under the influence of radio waves, and the vessel itself subsequently dissolves.
The RFA method can be used for any diameter of varicose veins, at all stages of the disease. The procedure allows you to avoid vein thrombosis and other complications of varicose veins.
How is the RFA Procedure Performed?
Radiofrequency vein ablation in Lviv at the Korona Medical Center is performed on a modern radiofrequency device, the Covidien Vnus RFG 2 Revision 4.6.0 Generator (USA). Before the procedure, the skin is treated with a sterilizing solution. A small puncture (2–3 mm) is made in the vein, and a radiofrequency catheter is inserted into the vein, which acts on its wall with a temperature of about 120 ℃. The length of the working part of the radiofrequency catheter is 7 cm. Each segment of the vein is treated sequentially for 20 seconds.
After each RFA cycle, the catheter is moved to the next 7 cm, and a new cycle of treatment of the subcutaneous veins is activated with one press of a button. Special marks on the catheter allow it to be moved exactly the required distance. The entire procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance. Thanks to a feedback sensor, there is no need to calculate the power of the energy supply.
Tumescent anesthesia and external pressure provide the necessary close contact of the working part of the catheter with the vessel wall. One vein is treated for an average of 3–5 minutes. Technical parameters are displayed on the screen of the radiofrequency generator in real time.
Radiofrequency energy is safe; therefore, it is easily tolerated by the patient. During the treatment, radiofrequency waves act specifically on the type II collagen protein, thus closing the affected vein without violating the integrity of the venous wall or damaging other vessels of the lower extremities.
